Guiding Question: Why is the Old Testament sacrificial system so bloody—especially if God is the author of life?
The Heart Behind the Old Testament Sacrificial System
The sacrificial system wasn’t about appeasing a bloodthirsty deity—it was God’s way of making space for His people to draw near without being consumed by His holiness (Leviticus 3:1–5).
Life is in the blood, and blood was required because sin is deadly serious—it costs life (Leviticus 17:11).
The fellowship offering celebrated restored relationship through a shared meal in God’s presence (Leviticus 3:16–17).
The prophets and psalmists insisted: rituals without repentance are rejected—God wants hearts that are humble and trusting (Isaiah 1:11–17; Psalm 51:16–17).
The Point: God wasn’t trying to get what’s on our plates—He was trying to get us to the table.
Application: Whenever guilt creeps in this week, don’t spiral—say: “Thank You, Jesus. You paid the price so I could come to the table.”
Closing Reflection: Hebrews shows us the deeper truth: the old sacrifices were just shadows. Jesus didn’t just forgive sin—He fulfilled the entire sacrificial system and replaced it with an invitation. His once-for-all offering truly removes sin and opens the way into God’s presence forever. The work is finished. The table is set. You’re invited.
