Message Listening Guide

Guiding Question: Why would God choose such a strange way to launch his church?

Peter’s Message: Peter declares that the Spirit’s arrival proves Jesus is risen, exalted, and reigning as both Lord and Messiah—and calls his hearers to repent, be baptized, and receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit.

Why Pentecost?
At Pentecost, the Spirit reverses Babel, uniting diverse nations through one message that points to Jesus, not human pride (Gen. 11).
Pentecost fulfills Sinai: where 3,000 died under the letter of the Law, now 3,000 live as the Spirit writes God’s law on their hearts (Exod. 32:28).
Pentecost fulfills the harvest festival: the birth of the church becomes the firstfruits of God’s great harvest from all the earth (Lev. 23; Deut. 16).

The Response: Cut to the heart, the crowd repents, is baptized, and filled with the Spirit. They become a community marked by devotion to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer—a life together characterized by generosity, joy, awe, and daily growth, bearing witness that the Spirit had truly made them God’s new temple.

The Point: When the Spirit fills you, devotion defines you.

Application:
Repent and Be Baptized (Acts 2:38) Baptism is the sign of surrender—it marks belonging to Christ and entry into his new family.
Be Filled and Devoted (Acts 2:42–47) The marks of this Spirit-filled life aren’t flashy—they’re steady: devotion to the Word, fellowship, sharing meals, prayer, generosity, worship, and growth.

Connection Group Conversation Guide

Pray: Update prayer requests and pray to begin your time together.

Get-to-know-you Question: Share your name with the group and the answer to the question: What’s one of your favorite meals to share with others, and what makes it special?

Opening Question: What’s one hobby, habit, or relationship you’ve been deeply devoted to in your life? How did that devotion show up in your daily rhythms?

Review: Sunday’s message focused on the launch of the early church at Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit’s arrival marked the beginning of a new, Spirit-filled community. Peter boldly declared that Jesus is risen, exalted, and reigning, calling people to repent, be baptized, and receive the Holy Spirit. This moment reversed the confusion of Babel, fulfilled the meaning of Sinai and the harvest festival, and resulted in a vibrant, devoted community. The sermon emphasized that when the Spirit fills you, devotion defines you—a call to live a life marked by worship, generosity, fellowship, and growth.

Discuss: When the gospel enters a new place—whether through missionaries or church planters—there often seems to be an outpouring of Holy Spirit activity, like a floodgate opening. Why do you think that happens?

Read Acts 2:36–41.

Discuss: If you had been part of the crowd hearing Peter’s sermon, what do you think would have stood out or surprised you the most?

Discuss: Can you recall a moment when you, or a group you were a part of, were filled with the Holy Spirit? What happened?

Discuss: If “when the Spirit fills you, devotion defines you,” which area of devotion (Word, fellowship, prayer, generosity, worship) do you feel most called to grow in right now? What would it look like to press forward in that area?

Pray: Close in prayer asking for God’s kingdom to expand in our lives and the world.
