Hooked on Hollow

Message Listening Guide

Guiding Question: Why is it that the things we chase for joy often leave us less happy in the end?

The Design of Joy (Psalm 1)
Psalm 1 describes the happy person as rooted, fruitful, and obedient—aligned with God’s ways.
Sin may feel rewarding in the moment, but it ultimately leaves us withered.
God built the world in such a way that righteousness and happiness go together (see Deuteronomy 30:15-18).

The Power of Joy (John 15:1-11)
Jesus is the true Psalm 1 man—He lived the joyful, obedient life we’ve all failed to live.
He invites us not to try harder, but to abide in Him and receive His joy.
Obedience flows from connection, and joy is the fruit of that relationship.

The Point: If the path to joy runs through obedience, the power to walk it comes through Jesus.

Application: Cultivate and Confess
Pick one temptation or false joy, and bring it honestly to Jesus.
Reflect on where the path of sin would eventually lead, and where God is guiding you instead.
Ask Him to reshape your desires: “Help me want what You want. Help me believe that holiness leads to joy.”

Closing Reminders:
Jesus offers more than forgiveness—He offers His joy.
When we stay near to Him, He changes not just our behavior, but our desires.
Ask Him to retrain your heart—to love what is good, and lose your taste for what is hollow.
